DR. RANDALL BROWN: QVAR RediHaler is the first and only breath-actuated aerosol inhaled corticosteroid. QVAR RediHaler is indicated for the maintenance treatment of asthma as prophylactic therapy in patients 4 years of age or older. QVAR Inhalation Aerosol is not indicated for the relief of acute bronchospasm.


Let’s take a look at some of the key features of QVAR RediHaler. Breath-actuated delivery1 eliminates the need for hand-breath coordination. No spacer needed, and should not be used with a spacer.1 Requires a low inspiratory flow rate of 20 L/min.1 Note that less than 60 L/min is considered a low inspiratory flow rate.2 QVAR RediHaler also has a built-in dose counter on the back to track doses remaining, and no shaking, priming, or washing are needed.1


Similar to QVAR, QVAR RediHaler delivers extra-fine small particles which target chronic inflammation in both the large and small airways. While deposition studies have not been conducted with QVAR RediHaler, data from QVAR, which is bioequivalent to QVAR RediHaler, show that the majority of medication is deposited in the lungs and not the oropharynx.

  • Oropharyngeal Candidiasis Localized infections with Candida albicans have occurred in the mouth and pharynx in some patients receiving QVAR RediHaler. Advise rinsing of mouth with water without swallowing after use. If oropharyngeal candidiasis develops, QVAR RediHaler may need to be temporarily interrupted under close medical supervision
  • Deterioration of asthma and acute episodes: Do not use QVAR RediHaler for the relief of acute symptoms. Instruct patients to contact their physician immediately if episodes of asthma that are not responsive to bronchodilators occur during the course of treatment with QVAR RediHaler
  • Transferring Patients from Systemic Corticosteroid Therapy: Particular care is needed in patients who are transferred from systemically active corticosteroids to QVAR RediHaler because deaths due to adrenal insufficiency have occurred in asthmatic patients during and after transfer from systemic corticosteroids to less systemically available inhaled corticosteroids. Taper patients slowly from systemic corticosteroids if transferring to QVAR RediHaler
  • Immunosuppression and Risks of Infections: Patients who are on drugs that suppress the immune system, such as corticosteroids, are more susceptible to infections than healthy individuals and should avoid exposure to chicken pox or measles. Inhaled corticosteroids should be used with caution, if at all, in patients with active or quiescent tuberculosis infection of the respiratory tract; untreated systemic fungal, bacterial, parasitic, or viral infections; or ocular herpes simplex
  • Paradoxical Bronchospasm: Inhaled corticosteroids may produce inhalation-induced bronchospasm with an immediate increase in wheezing after dosing that may be life-threatening. If this occurs with QVAR RediHaler, it should be treated immediately with an inhaled, short-acting bronchodilator. Treatment with QVAR RediHaler should be discontinued and alternate therapy instituted
  • Hypersensitivity reactions: Hypersensitivity reactions, such as urticaria, angioedema, rash, and bronchospasm, may occur after administration of QVAR RediHaler. Discontinue QVAR RediHaler if such reactions occur
  • Hypercorticism and Adrenal Suppression: It is possible that systemic corticosteroid effects such as hypercorticism and adrenal suppression may appear in a small number of patients, particularly at higher than recommended doses. If such changes occur, reduce the QVAR RediHaler dose slowly, consistent with accepted procedures for reducing systemic corticosteroids and for management of asthma symptoms
  • Effects on Growth: Orally inhaled corticosteroids, including QVAR RediHaler, may cause a reduction in growth velocity when administered to pediatric patients. Routinely monitor the growth of pediatric patients receiving QVAR RediHaler. To minimize the systemic effects, titrate to the lowest dosage that effectively controls symptoms
  • Reduction in Bone Mineral Density (BMD): Decreases in bone mineral density have been observed with long-term administration of products containing inhaled corticosteroids. Patients with major risk factors for decreased bone mineral content should be monitored and treated with established standards of care
  • Glaucoma and Cataracts: Glaucoma, increased intraocular pressure, blurred vision and cataracts have been reported following the long-term administration of inhaled corticosteroids. Therefore, close monitoring is warranted in patients with a change in vision or with a history of increased intraocular pressure, blurred vision, glaucoma, and/or cataracts
  • Adverse Reactions: Most common adverse reactions (incidence ≥3% and >placebo) include oral candidiasis, upper respiratory tract infection, nasopharyngitis, allergic rhinitis, oropharyngeal pain and sinusitis.

VOICEOVER: Patients need to correctly use their inhaled asthma medication devices to obtain adequate asthma control, but obstacles can affect their ability to do so. First, many patients lack the hand-breath coordination required to use their press-and-breathe inhalers correctly. Next, to trigger medication release, dry-powder inhalers are dependent on inspiratory flow, which varies among patients. An exciting innovation in asthma maintenance therapy was designed to help address these issues.

QVAR RediHaler is the first and only breath-actuated ICS for the maintenance treatment of asthma.5 QVAR RediHaler is not indicated for the relief of acute bronchospasm. QVAR RediHaler is available in two dosage strengths: 40 micrograms and 80 micrograms. QVAR RediHaler is a breath-actuated device that eliminates the need for hand-breath coordination.5 QVAR RediHaler requires a low inspiratory flow rate of 20 Liters per min to deliver a dose of medicine.5* Less than 60 Liters per minute is considered to be a low inspiratory flow rate. QVAR RediHaler is bioequivalent to QVAR® beclomethasone dipropionate HFA Inhalation Aerosol.5,7 Each contains the same medicine which still targets both the large and small airways.8,9 Plus, a built-in dose counter keeps track of doses remaining, counting down with each inhalation. The counter registers each individual dose. It displays the descending count in units of two. Using QVAR RediHaler requires 3 basic steps for operation5: open, inhale and close. This video is not intended to provide instructions for use. Please see the Instructions for Use in the full Prescribing Information at QVAR.com. To begin: Open the while cap and breathe out fully. QVAR RediHaler does not require priming or shaking. Then, place the mouthpiece in your mouth and inhale deeply to release the medicine. Remember: Hold the inhaler upright as you take your inhalation and do not cover the vents on top.5 After you remove the inhaler, hold your breath for 5 to 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly away from the inhaler. The breath-actuated delivery eliminates the need for hand-breath coordination. The inhalation draws air through the device.10 This triggers the device to deliver a dose of aerosolized medicine. Lastly, always close the cap after use. This prepares the device for the next inhalation. When you want to provide your patients with a maintenance treatment for asthma that requires no hand-breath coordination, a low inspiratory flow rate of 20 Liters per minute and small particles to target both the large and small airways, consider QVAR RediHaler for your appropriate pediatric and adult patients.

Female: [Applause] Ladies and gentlemen, the moment you and I have been waiting for. We took the press-and-breathe inhaler and brought it to another level. [Applause]


This is QVAR RediHaler, beclomethasone dipropionate HFA inhalation aerosol. It releases the medicine when you breathe in. That’s known as breath-actuated, which means no pushing the canister, there is nothing to press or shake. As soon as you open the cap, it’s ready. Let me show you a preview and then we’ll go into more detail. [Applause]


First, open the white cap. Next, inhale one time. Then, close the cap.


But wait, there’s more we need to talk about. Do not use QVAR RediHaler if you are allergic to beclomethasone dipropionate or any of the ingredients in QVAR RediHaler. Remember, do not shake QVAR RediHaler, and the white cap must be closed to prepare the inhaler before each inhalation or you will not receive your medicine. Do not open the cap until you are ready to take your inhalation.


Now, let’s go over the steps to use your QVAR RediHaler correctly.


1. Open the white cap that covers the mouthpiece of the inhaler. Do not open the cap unless you are taking a dose. Breathe out fully.


2. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth and close your lips around it so you form a good seal. To avoid blocking airflow through the device, be sure that your hand doesn’t cover the air vent on top of the inhaler. Hold the inhaler and mouthpiece upright as you take your inhalation, inhale deeply to release the medicine. Remove the inhaler, hold your breath for five to ten seconds, then breathe out slowly, away from the inhaler.


3. Close the white cap after inhaling to prepare your next inhalation. If your doctor has told you to take more than one inhalation per dose, make sure the white cap is closed and repeat steps one through three.

How QVAR Redihaler works

Learn more about the small-particle ICS inhaler that targets the large and small airways of the lung.

QVAR RediHaler® Inhalation Aerosol is indicated for the maintenance treatment of asthma as prophylactic therapy in patients 4 years or older. It is not for the relief of acute bronchospasm.


Asthma is a harrowing condition, where inflammation occurs in large and small airways of the lungs, (pause) Narrow airways sometimes trigger attacks.


Although there are several ICS inhalers available to help reduce inflammation of the airways. And they’ve no doubt been helpful to many people;

Important Safety Information

  • Contraindications: QVAR RediHaler is contraindicated in:
    • Primary treatment of status asthmaticus or other acute episodes of asthma where intensive measures are required
    • Patients with known hypersensitivity to beclomethasone dipropionate or any of the ingredients in QVAR RediHaler
  • Oropharyngeal Candidiasis: Localized infections with Candida albicans have occurred in the mouth and pharynx in some patients receiving QVAR RediHaler. Advise rinsing of mouth with water without swallowing after use. If oropharyngeal candidiasis develops, QVAR RediHaler may need to be temporarily interrupted under close medical supervision
  • Deterioration of asthma and acute episodes: Do not use QVAR RediHaler for the relief of acute symptoms. Instruct patients to contact their physician immediately if episodes of asthma that are not responsive to bronchodilators occur during the course of treatment with QVAR RediHaler
  • Transferring Patients from Systemic Corticosteroid Therapy: Particular care is needed in patients who are transferred from systemically active corticosteroids to QVAR RediHaler because deaths due to adrenal insufficiency have occurred in asthmatic patients during and after transfer from systemic corticosteroids to less systemically available inhaled corticosteroids. Taper patients slowly from systemic corticosteroids if transferring to QVAR RediHaler
  • Immunosuppression and Risks of Infections: Patients who are on drugs that suppress the immune system, such as corticosteroids, are more susceptible to infections than healthy individuals and should avoid exposure to chicken pox or measles. Inhaled corticosteroids should be used with caution, if at all, in patients with active or quiescent tuberculosis infection of the respiratory tract; untreated systemic fungal, bacterial, parasitic, or viral infections; or ocular herpes simplex
  • Paradoxical Bronchospasm: Inhaled corticosteroids may produce inhalation-induced bronchospasm with an immediate increase in wheezing after dosing that may be life-threatening. If this occurs with QVAR RediHaler, it should be treated immediately with an inhaled, short-acting bronchodilator. Treatment with QVAR RediHaler should be discontinued and alternate therapy instituted
  • Hypersensitivity reactions: Hypersensitivity reactions, such as urticaria, angioedema, rash, and bronchospasm, may occur after administration of QVAR RediHaler. Discontinue QVAR RediHaler if such reactions occur
  • Hypercorticism and Adrenal Suppression: It is possible that systemic corticosteroid effects such as hypercorticism and adrenal suppression may appear in a small number of patients, particularly at higher than recommended doses. If such changes occur, reduce the QVAR RediHaler dose slowly, consistent with accepted procedures for reducing systemic corticosteroids and for management of asthma symptoms
  • Effects on Growth: Orally inhaled corticosteroids, including QVAR RediHaler, may cause a reduction in growth velocity when administered to pediatric patients. Routinely monitor the growth of pediatric patients receiving QVAR RediHaler. To minimize the systemic effects, titrate to the lowest dosage that effectively controls symptoms
  • Reduction in Bone Mineral Density (BMD): Decreases in bone mineral density have been observed with long-term administration of products containing inhaled corticosteroids. Patients with major risk factors for decreased bone mineral content should be monitored and treated with established standards of care
  • Glaucoma and Cataracts: Glaucoma, increased intraocular pressure, blurred vision and cataracts have been reported following the long-term administration of inhaled corticosteroids. Therefore, close monitoring is warranted in patients with a change in vision or with a history of increased intraocular pressure, blurred vision, glaucoma, and/or cataracts
  • Adverse Reactions: Most common adverse reactions (incidence ≥3% and >placebo) include oral candidiasis, upper respiratory tract infection, nasopharyngitis, allergic rhinitis, oropharyngeal pain and sinusitis.

Indication

QVAR RediHaler is indicated for the maintenance treatment of asthma as prophylactic therapy in patients 4 years of age or older.

Limitation of Use: QVAR RediHaler is not indicated for the relief of acute bronchospasm.
